    Yes, professional tax (PT) is mandatory in Ahmedabad under the Gujarat State Tax on Professions, Trades, Callings and Employment Act, 1976. It applies to every individual earning income from employment, business, or profession in Gujarat — including salaried employees, shop owners, company directors, doctors, lawyers, CAs, IT professionals, and manufacturers. The maximum annual liability is ₹2,500. Employees earning below ₹12,000 per month are exempt.
    PEC (Professional Enrollment Certificate) is required by every self-employed professional and business - it represents tax on your own profession or business. PRC (Professional Registration Certificate) is required by every employer who has employees on their payroll - it authorised you to deduct PT from employee salaries and deposit it with the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. Most businesses in Ahmedabad need both PEC (for the business) and PRC (for employees). We assess your situation and tell you exactly which is required.
    For PEC (self-employed / business), the annual payment is due by 30th September of each financial year. For PRC (employer deductions), the due date depends on your workforce size. If you have more than 20 employees, you must deposit the PT by the 15th of the following month. If you have 20 or fewer employees, you pay quarterly  by 15th July (Q1), 15th October (Q2), 15th January (Q3), and 15th April (Q4). We send you WhatsApp reminders 10 days before each deadline.
    If you fail to register within the mandatory 30-day period after starting business or employing staff, you face a penalty of ₹20 per day for every day of continued default under Section 5(5) of the Act. Additionally, any unpaid professional tax attracts interest at 18% per annum calculated on a daily basis. If you deduct PT from employees but fail to deposit it with AMC, you face additional penalties and can be subject to forced recovery. Registering correctly from the start is always the better choice.
     
    Three categories are fully exempt from professional tax in Gujarat: (1) Employees earning less than ₹12,000 per month - no PT deduction required from their salary. (2) Physically disabled individuals - they must submit a valid disability certificate to claim the exemption. (3) Senior citizens aged 65 years and above. You must still have the PRC registration as an employer - you simply do not deduct PT from the exempt employees. We calculate all this correctly in your monthly payroll.
     
    Yes. Professional tax registration in Gujarat is location-specific. Each office, branch, shop, warehouse, or place of business needs its own PEC and PRC certificates. If you have three offices in Ahmedabad - say one each in Navrangpura, Bodakdev and Naroda - each of those locations needs separate PT certificates from its respective ward office or municipal jurisdiction.
